Greenacres Primary School Unveils New Wall Design

Greenacres Primary School Unveils New Wall Design – Thanks to OuttaReach UK

At last year’s Empower Multi Academy Trust Headteacher Conference, we were delighted to welcome OuttaReach UK as one of our exhibitors. Their team, represented by Jay and Shannon, spent the day connecting with school leaders from across the Trust, sharing their creative work and gaining a deeper understanding of the values that unite our Empower community.

Jay reflected on the experience, noting that what stood out most was the shared passion, collaboration and commitment from everyone involved in the Trust. The OuttaReach UK team were struck by the genuine drive to create inspiring learning environments where young people can feel supported, motivated and proud of their school spaces.

Following the conference, and with support from our CEO, Carla Whelan, OuttaReach UK were able to begin working with several EmpowerMat schools. The partnership even expanded beyond Shropshire, opening new opportunities as far as the Isle of Man.

As a gesture of appreciation for the warm welcome they received, OuttaReach UK generously offered one Empower school a free bespoke wall wrap—a creative addition designed to uplift and inspire pupils every day.

After speaking with Karen Matthews, Headteacher at Greenacres Primary, the OuttaReach team were particularly moved by her passion for her school, her pupils, and the environment they learn in. It quickly became clear that Greenacres would be the perfect home for the gift.

We are delighted to share that the brand‑new wall wrap has now been installed—and it looks fantastic. The vibrant design adds something truly special to the school’s interior and has already made a positive impact on the atmosphere within the building.

Jay from OuttaReach UK said he hoped the finished piece “helps inspire pupils every day and adds something special to the space they learn in.”

On behalf of Empower Multi Academy Trust, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jay, Shannon and the whole OuttaReach UK team for their generosity and continued support. We are also incredibly proud of the leadership at Greenacres Primary and grateful to Carla Whelan for enabling such meaningful partnerships across our Trust.

This collaboration is another wonderful example of how strong relationships, shared values and creative thinking can come together to enhance the experiences of the children and young people we serve.

Hywel Roberts Inspires Staff at Wilfred Owen Primary School

Wednesday 11th March 2026 was an inspiring and energising professional development day at Wilfred Owen Primary School, as staff welcomed renowned teacher, writer, humourist, and curriculum imagineer Hywel Roberts. The day, planned and led by Head of School Sarah O’Hara, brought colleagues together for a powerful blend of practice-sharing, creativity, and joyful learning.

Sarah described the training as:

“A wonderful day talking all things Botheredness and History, the perfect combination. It was a day to share practice, laugh and reflect together. Joy and warmth were top of the agenda, alongside intellectual engagement and creativity. The room was buzzing, and colleagues left with practical takeaways to develop in their own schools.”

A Day of Storytelling, Creativity and ‘Botheredness’

Across three expertly crafted sessions, Hywel introduced colleagues to the concept of Botheredness® a rich, research-informed approach centred on making learning matter, grounding teaching in narrative, and fostering pupil investment.
The day explored:

  • developing professional imagination in teaching
  • using stories and narratives to support pupil progress
  • the role of drama pedagogy in deepening historical understanding
  • creative models including The Ship (The Greeks), People/Place/Problem, and Riverboat Taxis (The Great Fire of London)
  • strategies for encouraging strong oracy and positive learning behaviours across the curriculum

Hywel’s practical examples, humour and energy created an environment where colleagues felt both inspired and equipped to try new approaches immediately.

A Trust-Wide Commitment to Quality Learning

Empower Multi Academy Trust’s commitment to high-quality professional development was central to the day. CEO Carla emphasised the importance of ensuring that all staff have access to rich, high‑value learning experiences that strengthen both teaching and curriculum design.

She also highlighted the Trust’s belief that supporting excellent education should extend beyond its own schools. Local partner schools were invited to attend the event free of charge, reflecting the Trust’s view that improving teaching benefits all children, not only those within Empower MAT.

An Impact That Lasts Beyond the Training Room

Colleagues left the day with:

  • renewed enthusiasm for imaginative, learner‑centred teaching
  • practical tools and strategies ready to implement straight away
  • deeper understanding of how narrative, creativity and enactive learning support pupil motivation and progress

The day reaffirmed the power of high‑quality professional development: building confidence, strengthening curriculum thinking, and nurturing joyful teaching.

Celebrating the Official Opening of The Orchard

Greenacres Primary School Celebrates the Official Opening of The Orchard

Greenacres Primary School marked a proud and memorable moment on Friday 6th February as the school community came together to officially open The Orchard, a new specialised provision designed to support children with a range of SEND needs.

The ribbon‑cutting ceremony was attended by Julie Buckley, MP for Shrewsbury, alongside Carla Whelan, representatives from Shropshire Council, and the fantastic staff whose hard work made this achievement possible. They were joined by families, parents, carers, and pupils as the event celebrated a shared commitment to inclusive education and the bright future The Orchard offers local children.

A Provision Rooted in Inclusion and Community Need

The Orchard was developed in direct response to the high level of SEND need in the local area, combined with a shortage of specialist school places and the school’s desire to be part of a wider solution that benefits children and their families. Greenacres’ staff bring a wealth of experience to this work, and the project also aligns with ongoing national SEND reforms and local hub developments.

Supported through Local Authority funding, The Orchard has been purposefully designed as a flexible, child‑centred space. The provision offers a blended learning approach, enabling children to spend time both in their mainstream classrooms and within The Orchard itself—building gradually and responsively based on individual needs.

A Wrap‑Around Model of Care

At the heart of The Orchard is a family‑centred, child‑centred model that ensures every child remains an integral part of the Greenacres community. The approach supports children through a carefully coordinated wrap‑around system involving their main class, The Orchard team, and their home environment. This creates stability, confidence, and a consistent experience across all parts of a child’s day.

A Milestone for Greenacres and the Community

Guests at the opening event celebrated not just a new building, but a meaningful step forward for inclusive education across Shrewsbury. The Orchard reflects the school’s long‑standing ethos of valuing every child, recognising their unique strengths, and ensuring they receive the support they need to flourish.

Greenacres would like to thank everyone who joined the celebration and all those who have contributed to bringing The Orchard to life. The school looks forward to seeing the positive impact this provision will have for current and future pupils.

Reintroducing FAME: Our Teaching and Learning Principles – Now updated and stronger than ever

Over two years, our trust has worked together to define what great teaching and learning looks like. This led to FAME – our shared set of principles. They have evolved over time and have now been refined in line with the new OFSTED toolkit, been shaped by evidence, professional learning, and your feedback.

What is FAME? A quick reminder

FAME is our trust-wide framework for high quality teaching and learning, created collaboratively by leaders and staff. Developed through trials, feedback, and professional learning, it provides a clear, consistent set of principles that guide lesson design, monitoring, CPD, and classroom practice.
The result is a shared, practical understanding of effective teaching – rooted in what works.

Why FAME matters…

  • A shared, simple language for effective teaching
  • Supports strong modelling, feedback and assessment
  • Strengthens consistency across phases and subjects
  • Enables purposeful, focused observations
  • Strengthen links between evidence-informed practice and daily teaching

What is new? FAME updated in line with the new toolkit

As part of our ongoing commitment to continual improvement, the FAME toolkit has been reviewed and updated, ensuring it aligns with:

  • The latest research
  • Aligned with the OFSTED Toolkit
  • The most recent professional learning (including NPQLT and WalkThrus)
  • Feedback gathered from staff across all schools

Across trust reviews, we continue to see that where FAME is applied consistently, it strengthens routines, retrieval, modelling, assessment for learning, independence, and pupil progress. These areas sit at the heart of the revised toolkit, providing greater clarity and usability for staff.

FAME built on evidence, and built with you

FAME was never intended to be a top down initiative. Its strength lies in the fact that it has been shaped organically:

  • Schools trialled the FAME framework
  • Staff provided structured voice and feedback
  • Observations, monitoring, and QA cycles highlighted what worked

Designed with you – for real impact

Your insights, trialling and professional expertise have shaped this update. FAME grows stronger because you use it, refine it, and reflect with it.

What happens next?

We will continue supporting all staff to embed the updated FAME principles more consistently across classrooms. This includes:

See FAME in action

  • Live modelling and coaching sessions
  • Opportunities to see FAME in action across schools
  • CPD directly linked to FAME principles
  • Classroom walkthroughs and examples

In Summary

FAME is:

  • Our shared teaching and learning principles
  • Evidence-based and practice-informed
  • Updated and improved using staff voice
  • Central to how we plan, teach, observe, and improve

Thank you for your continued commitment to refining practice and supporting this trust wide approach. Your feedback has shaped FAME, and will continue to shape what comes next.

FAME = Simplicity. Clarity. Consistency.

Let’s keep embedding the principles that drive great teaching – and great learning.

Wilfred Owen Primary School Becomes the First School Radio Club!

Wilfred Owen Primary Leads the Way with INTune Radio CIC School Radio Club

Wilfred Owen Primary School has proudly become the first school to join the INTune Radio CIC School Radio Club, marking an exciting milestone in empowering pupils through the art of broadcasting.

The initiative, launched in partnership with INTune Radio CIC, gives children the opportunity to develop their oracy skills, confidence, and creativity by producing and presenting their own radio content. This innovative approach not only enhances speaking and listening skills but also nurtures teamwork and self-expression in a fun, engaging environment.

Head of School Sarah O’Hara shared her thoughts in a recent interview, highlighting the positive impact the project has had on pupils:

“Being part of the radio club has given our children a real voice. They are learning to articulate their ideas clearly, listen actively, and communicate with confidence. It’s been incredible to see their enthusiasm and growth.”

The School Radio Club is more than just broadcasting, it’s about developing essential life skills. Pupils are learning how to plan, script, and present shows, while gaining experience in media production and teamwork. These skills will serve them well both inside and outside the classroom.

Children involved in the project have shared their excitement:

“I love being on the radio because I get to talk about things I enjoy and people listen to me!” – Year 5 pupil
“It’s helped me feel more confident speaking in front of others.” – Year 4 pupil
“We work together to make the show, and it’s really fun!” – Year 6 pupil

INTune Radio CIC aims to expand the School Radio Club across Shropshire, giving more schools the chance to benefit from this unique learning experience. Wilfred Owen Primary’s pioneering role sets a fantastic example of how schools can embrace innovative projects to enrich education.

Empower MAT to Introduce Smartphone Ban

We at Empower Trust Are Taking Action on Smartphones

At Empower Multi Academy Trust, we believe in creating the best possible learning environment for our pupils. That’s why we are consulting on plans to ban smartphones during the school day across all our schools, with full implementation expected by September 2026.

Under these proposals, pupils will not bring smartphones to school. However, basic non-smart devices for emergencies will still be allowed and stored securely during the day.

This decision follows strong feedback from parents, carers, staff, and students who want to reduce distractions and improve wellbeing. We are also proud to be working with the Smartphone Free Childhood in Shropshire group to support healthy screen habits for young people.

Managing Change: The Power of Letting Go, Reprogramming the Mind, and Leading with Authenticity

This week has set me some personal challenges as a leader. Some moments that triggered emotions I truly thought I’d managed, conquered… sunk!

Yet a discovery this week is that they don’t go … do they! They are always somewhere within.

So what I’ve learnt, rediscovered and refreshed this week….

Change is the one constant in life, yet it remains one of the hardest things for us to embrace. Whether in business, relationships, or personal growth, change often arrives with resistance, fear, and uncertainty. But what if the very key to navigating change lies in letting go, in reprogramming how we respond to challenges, and in learning to trust the ancient instincts that have guided humans for millennia?

This week I’ve started reading the “Let Them” Theory: A Pathway to Freedom….

The “let them” theory has gained attention because of its simplicity: when people reveal who they are, when they act in ways that don’t align with your expectations, you simply let them. Instead of trying to control, persuade, or carry the emotional weight of others’ actions, you allow them to do what they will—and you choose how to respond.

This principle is liberating because it shifts focus from control to clarity. By “letting them,” you conserve your energy for your values, your goals, and your growth. It isn’t about passivity; it’s about intentional detachment.

I thought I’d already reprogrammed my Mind, but I’ve needed to refresh ‘The Neuroscience of Letting Go’….

The human brain is wired for survival, not serenity. When faced with difficulties, our nervous system activates stress responses—fight, flight, or freeze—designed to protect us from danger. The challenge is that in modern life, these ancient mechanisms fire not just at predators but at emails, deadlines, or difficult conversations.

The good news is that the brain can be rewired. Through mindfulness, reframing, and conscious practice, we can reprogram our neural pathways to respond with calm rather than chaos. Neuroscience shows that repeated practices—such as pausing before reacting, deep breathing, or challenging negative thought loops—literally reshape the brain’s networks.

This is where emotional intelligence becomes a superpower. By noticing emotions without being consumed by them, we build resilience. Yet, emotional intelligence is not about endless tolerance. It’s about managing emotions in a way that aligns with both wellbeing and values.

The challenges faced for me this last year only strength my feeling that authentic leadership that is anchored in Values is the only way of leading….

Leadership today demands authenticity. People are no longer inspired by titles—they’re moved by leaders who act consistently with their values, who are transparent, and who show humanity in decision-making.

Managing change as a leader means being honest about uncertainty while remaining grounded in purpose. It means listening—not only to your team but also to yourself. Authentic leadership doesn’t chase approval; it stands firm in values and creates trust through consistency.

There has also been that reminder this week that there truly is wisdom in the Gut. It is our Ancient Compass…

“Trust your gut” is more than a cliché—it’s an evolutionary gift. Long before we had boardrooms and strategy documents, our ancestors relied on instinct to survive. The gut, sometimes called the “second brain,” houses millions of neurons that communicate directly with the brain. This enteric nervous system helps regulate not only digestion but also intuition.

When our gut tells us something feels wrong, it’s often drawing from subconscious data—patterns we’ve absorbed but not yet processed consciously. In the caves of our ancestors, ignoring that gut feeling might mean walking into danger. Today, it might mean signing a contract that doesn’t feel right, or pursuing a role that isn’t aligned with our values.

Gut instinct is powerful, but like emotional intelligence, it requires management. We must learn to differentiate between fear of the unknown and genuine inner wisdom. This balance—listening while questioning—turns instinct into a refined decision-making tool.

So my conclusion this week is that change is MY Teacher…

To manage change is not to conquer it but to dance with it. The “let them” theory reminds us that freedom lies in detachment. Neuroscience shows us we can rewire our minds to respond with strength rather than stress. Emotional intelligence gives us the language to manage our inner world, and authentic leadership roots us in values. And finally, our gut—an ancient ally—offers a compass, if we learn to listen.

Change will always come. The question is: will we resist it, or will we grow with it?

I hope to dance with it daily.
